To beat a Deadwood

What is it about network television programming that sucks so badly? I haven't seen a show on television that didn't just outright suck since Ed, one of the the only really good network shows I've ever watched. That includes Knight Rider, The A-team, and The Dukes of Hazzard. Unbunch your panties, I'm not saying that there weren't plenty of shows that were entertaining. After all, I just made a post modeled after 24. Obviously, many people would be upset if I failed to recognize that Seinfeld and The Simpsons are funny.

But that's not what this post is about. This post is about shows on HBO. What is it about shows on HBO and my fascination with them. So far, of all the recent shows on HBO, I've only disliked Da Ali G Show. Even that show has its moments. I actually own all of The Sopranos seasons that have been released on DVD, the Band Of Brothers mini-series, both of the Six Feet Under Seasons, and the first season of Da Ali G Show. The only other two television shows I have are the first season of Twin Peaks, and Chapelle's Show (I'll be getting the second season when I get back if my girlfriend likes it too). I'll probably wind up buying every season of Sex & the City on DVD for my girlfriend.

I've always liked things that come in series; I own all of the Star Wars movies, all of the Indiana Jones movies, all three special extended editions of The Lord of the Rings, all of the Alien movies, both Predator movies, all three Matrix movies (yes, I like all of them too, and I might buy the Animatrix, eventually), both Resident Evil movies, both Fast and the Furious movies (gifts, they pretty much suck) and I plan to buy all of the James Bond and Bruce Lee box sets. I am sure that there are more series that I own and plan to buy that I haven't mentioned because they just didn't spring to mind. Anyway, I think this is why I bought the HBO series. I don't think this is why I enjoy them.

My guess is that I enjoy them because they are just better shows. The writers for these shows actually have to write the show. They aren't there to fill the space between commercials. I am already planning on buying Oz. Lately, a lot of you have been talking about Deadwood. It seems there is a consensus that no one knows what is really going on. One of my favorite movies, Lost Highway by David Lynch (also responsible for Twin Peaks) is like that. Should I pass or should I get Deadwood too?

The overall plot on Deadwood is follow-able. It's the little minute-to-minute soup of details and dialogue that are a fucking cocksucker to keep up with.

But it's more than worth it to watch Ian McShane do his thing. Totally mesmerizing.

If people are having trouble following Deadwood, it is because they are busy playing my "Ian McShane says Cocksucker" drinking game (TM).

Huzzah! I would like to take this moment to thank all of you hoople-heads, fuckers, and cocksuckers for recommending Deadwood. Imagine my surprise when I found season one on DVD at the PX. I have already watched it in its entirety. This sucks, I know that season two won't be out on DVD forever.
